A little about me.  I had my surgery August 22, 2005.  I weighed 360 at the time of surgery.  I have had no issues with food after surgery as far as dumping or not being able to eat anything I wanted.  I have never pushed the issue with eating sugar foods though.  My lowest weight was 239.  First of all, let me say I was and am thrilled to have lost as much as I did.  Disapointed however that I did not loose more.  I talked with my doctor about this and was told he did not bypass as much as some doctors.  I wish this had been something I would have known before surgey.  I do not blame him, I put that on myself for not asking.  It just was one of the questions I did not think of. He gave me the reason of my age (55 now), and that he didnt think I should go down to 150 (where I wanted to be).

Now, I have allowed myself to gain back to 275.  I am so upset with myself.  I have to regain the drive I lost.

I know I eat too much, I eat the wrong things.  Even though I know this, I just can not get a handle on things.

I guess what I am saying is I need some help with this.  Any suggestions?

Somehow I don't see your age as being a problem.  I had gbs a year ago.  Starte at 336 and am now just under 200.  I will be 55 in August.  You might want to start your rebound by doing the five day pouch test that can be found on this site.  Wishing you success.

Hi Debbie,

The first thing you have to do is get off the carbs. You probably already know that. The five day pouch test seems to be a nice spring board for a lot of people. Personally I couldn't do it. Thank God I never had to do the 2 weeks of liquids before surgery either. I did do the 3 weeks after, a much easier task, I'm sure.

Anyway the thing you need to do is if you want and can do the 5 day then great. After that or in place of the pouch test then I would go with straight protein for a couple of weeks then add in ONLY good carbs. In very moderate amounts. Because they too can cause an increase in blood sugar which will cause you to crave again. I know its not well practiced here but the South Beach Diet or something on those lines will get you back on track. Its not easy but neither was the surgery, I'm sure and you got through that!! You did it before and you certainly can do it agan.

So in the end you want your 2:1 ratio protein:carbs. Only good carbs and you can get a list of the best fruits and veggies to keep you from getting too much sugar.

In my opinion the South Beach Diet is the best most nutricious diet there is for weight loss.  It is very balanced and concentrates on good carbs and good fats.  There is a great web site for this.  Just google active low carb forum and that should get you there.  Of course you may have to limit your portions to accomodate your pouch but in general the eating is very healthy and there are a lot of great people there as there are on this site.

Just wondering how it's going getting back on track. I think that's my main fear (as well as others too) ... getting off track eventually and regaining weight. But I don't think it's anything to feel ashamed about.

May I suggest going back to support group meetings if they are in your area. I stopped going to mine for a couple of months as our schedule got really hectic, but I started back last week and I'm GLAD I did! It's helpful to be around people that are in the same boat as I am, can relate, maybe have gotten off-track as well ... but I left with a renewed sense of motivation.

I'm only 5-months out, but I've gotten slightly off-track so I'm going to do the 5-day pouch test this week to give myself a jump start and get back on track. My surgery weight was 372 and I'm currently 288, but at a plateau.

Hi,,

It has been a long time for me. I was from the old board. Didn't get to know others as well as I would have liked.

I hope with this board I will have the time to  put in the effort  to get to know more of you better.
