Aww thanks! I dont even have a date yet but i will one of these days! What does everyone think of having a topic line for pre-op peeps?  I know we have the general, and then others for like vitamins and dumping and diet and sorts like that..but what about one for pre-op's?   where we can limit our search for other pre-ops and see if others are going through the same frustrations and excitements that we are...

just a brainstorm that blew over my head....

Happy Wednesday!

Hi Milissa,

I am Freespirit, aka Barbara and I have a date and it would be really helpful to get to that place where you all talk about how to prepare for the surgery , hospital stay and what to eat when I come home.  I can't seem to find it.

Also, I an having a terribe time because I seem to be going back and forth about the surgery.  I have a date and I am comitted, but maybe I need to read more and tlk more.  Do you think this would help?  My date is Dec 1, and even though I say it, it is still hard to try to understnad what it will really mean.

Hi Barbara:

I'm not sure I understand on not finding the sections on what to take to the hospital, etc.  Click on The Weight Loss Surgery Connection and look down the page at the list of topics. There are ones for what to take to the hospital, tips for weeks 1 & 2 and more.  If you can't find a topic you're looking for, just post a question and we'll all jump in and help.

Nerves are normal with any surgery.  You do however have to be mentally prepared for the road ahead.  We cannot stress that enough!  Let me say it again, you HAVE TO BE mentally prepared.  You'll have the tools to make this work so you have to be ready to make wise choices.  The mind is so incredibly powerful and you really have to tune your thinking into making the right choices and realizing that food isn't your comfort or your friend.  We say this over and over, it's not going to hug you or comfort you or wrap it's arms around you.  The wrong ones will definitely keep a fat layer around you though and keep you on the road to poor health.

Read, read and read some more. Ask questions. Share your concerns.  We're certain there are plenty here that can help ease some of your concerns.

Hey Barbara.  I was scared to death before my surgery...but, deep down inside...I was even more scared to death of NOT having the surgery, so I pushed through the fear and, oh so glad I did.  You have plenty of time...well, maybe not PLENTY but,...to read and research and study and prepare mentally for the big day.  Get busy making all your preps.  Make some chicken soup and freeze it in your ice cube trays.  Get your vitties.  Get your jammies yada yada yada.  Oh, a good step in all of this...clean out your cupboards and fridge of all the food you KNOW you will not be able to eat any more.  This is a REALLY good time to be doing that too since, most places are having can drives and food drives for the homeless!  Also, take some "before" pics of yourself...full length so that you will have them as you lose.  You will want them in a few weeks to look back on and inspire.  All of that should keep you nice and busy until its time.  Sounds like we're sendin ya away to have a baby LOL.  But, realistically, it is AS life changing as having a baby.  Good luck.

I don't have a date yet either.  I just know it will be sometime in March.  I am currently being weighed in at my Dr. office monthly for 6 months which is required by my insurance.  I hope they approve me after all that I've been through.  I would like to be able to corrospond with other's who are waiting for surgery.  I can't wait to be on the losing side.  I'll be waiting to hear from all you peeps.  Glor

Ok, I am starting my day with clear liquids and a cod liver oil chaser. That was horrible! So far that has been my worst experience. I'm getting nervous about tomorrow. Just want to fast forward past the part of walking into the OR and all the stuff that goes on before I'm asleep. It just keeps bringing up terrible memories of my last surgery. I am taking lots of deep breaths and trying to stay as busy as possible. Thank you all for your support and well wishes. I have to be at the hospital at 5:30 am tomorrow. It will be just like going to work!

I'm sure your surgery, tomorrow will go smoothly and you will soon be on the losing team.  When I read your note I thought about myself and how I'm going to feel in March whenever it's my turn.  you'll probably be 50 lbs lighter by then.  Good luck and God be with you.  I'll remember to say a prayer for you tonight and you'll be in my thoughts tomorrow.  Glor

Good luck, Lucinda.  I am keeping my thoughts and prayers with you today.  I just joined the group today, and am going to my first informational seminar tomorrow.  I just found out that my husband's insurance will cover the survey, less a $150 deductible, but I can handle that.  I am so excited...and nervous at the same time.  I am truly ready to get this over with.

Does anyone have an idea of approximately how long the average time frame is from the initial seminar to the actual surgery date, after all of the "good stuff" that has to be performed and completed before hand?

Congratulations to everyone who has lost so much weight!  I am truly encouraged by all of you and I can't wait to tell my success story.

Hi Barb:

It all depends on you and how fast you get everything scheduled.  The holidays will slow things down a little, but you should be able to schedule your appointments all around the same time and get it all expedited.  Ours took a total of 6 weeks, but we delayed 3 weeks of that due to our work obligations.

:)Hello all!  I am brand new to the weight loss surgery connection and, after 20 months of consistent work, jumping through hoops, etc., am finally approved for surgery with a date of January 17th.  I can't wait to read all your posts but just might skip those about going bald -- for now!    Blessings and Happy Thanksgiving!  Deb

Hi Deb:

We're certainly glad to have you join us and a big congratulations on your upcoming surgery!  Don't fret over the "bald" thing.  Actually, if you read those posts, you'll get some good suggestions and you'll also see it doesn't happen to everyone.  If the hair does start thinning, it WILL grow back.  :0)

So do you have a surgery date yet?  We're all here to help you any way we can.

Thanks for your greeting Melissa and Dan!  Glad to be with you and thankful for your starting this.  It is terrific.  My date is 1/17.  So, I am grateful for two months to truly prepare although I expect it will get a little nerve-wracking once the holidays are over!  All the best, Deb

Thanks for the welcome!  I am going to the meeting tonight, and depending on how much off of work I will have to take to get all the "pre-op" stuff done, I may end up taking a little longer, at least until I get new sick/vacation days in January.  Again, thanks.  I plan on checking the posts to keep myself up to date on what's going on.

Melissa,

Thanks for your encouragement.  I actually had the surgery pushed up!  I go in to have it done on Tuesday, November 29th.  It was strange but I told people who care about me, then the date was changed, and now I just did not say anything, so it will be all over before they know it!

I feel fine, and knowing that there are so many of you all who have been down this road is such a help!  It was great to hear Lucinda is doing so well.  I "freak" a little bit but I keep thinking that my whole life has been leading up to this.  You know, the other day I was telling someone, I just am tired of being "invisable" to others.  It is what happend to fat people.  You remember, that when you pass other people and they look at you, there is a moment when this stare comes into their eyes and they dismiss you...I have had that feeling all my life.  I am ready to be who I really am inside.

Hey there Barb:

We'll sure be thinking of you tomorrow.  Such a great time ahead for you!

Funny you mentioned feeling invisible . .  . we used to say that all the time as well.  It seemed we were always invisible or the focus of stares due to our size.  Soon, very soon, that's all going to change for you.

We'll all be waiting to hear when you get home.  :0)

Hi Everyone!

I just got home from the hospital today and had to stay an extra day because my temp was up a bit, so I felt alright, but expecially good to be home, even though it is cold, cold, cold!

I feel all sort of strange...you know like when something happens in a dream, then you wake up!  I went to the frig a little after I got home and was so surprised I did not have a reaction at all!  I had purchased some things at the health food store and regular grocery store, so I had a bit of squash soup, but thought it might be a good idea to go ahead and puree it in the blender first.  It takes awhile to eat and I know

S......L........O.....W.....L......Y......is the best way.  I still have to cough every so often. And now it is clear so I know it is going to be alright.

I hurt when I laugh, but it is all good because I know I did something important for ME, something to change my life and to finally become the person I feel like I am on the inside........I have an older Mother friend who was very concerned for me and I just told her that the doctor fixed the inside of me so eventually it will match the outside of me.

Here is a funny story that happened right before I went into surgery..

My doctor is a tall, extreamly intelligent, compassionate man, but he does not seem to have a funny bone in his body, but I just wanted him to appreciate me and who I am, so when he asked if I had any questions, I told him no but I would like to share a few thoughts with him.  First, I told him I completly trusted him, then I asked him to remember that I am 51 and that I never wanted to be a centerfold!  He just looked at me and mumbled something about there being no cameras in the OR!  I set him straight after I figured out that he was not understanding me and explained that I never wanted to be tiny, so he could be a little gracious with the size of the pouch, I think he got the drift, but he left sort of shaking his head, with a bit of a grin on his face!

Hi! :dude:

I am new here. I have only just recived my packet from a doctor ((not even sure if he will be my doc for surgery)). So far, I am just doing research.

A bit of good news is that my insurance deductiable just went from $1,000. to $500. per person. Tech. it is the same (there is only me and my hubby on the insurance). But, it makes it easier to pay the deductable!! :D

I am going to find today a nutrientionist, and all the other people that I need so I can get this going.

I am pre-op here. Go back to San Francisco AGAIN. But, so glad were able to schedule all three things in one day. Meet the Anest. Guy, physical with surgeon, and follow it up with pre-op class.

So, my ONLY fear is healing time. Worried that eat something and it will "poke" through my pouch and intestine connection. Sounds silly I know. An nervous, omg I am and my body is reacting to it. Little bumps on my legs that itch, this just started once saw Doc and he gave the clearence for surgery. So, WHEN is it really safe to take a bite not a swallow after surgery. I was thinking to extend the first stage, that scared I am of damaging pouch.

LOL  :D  So many set backs and nurses trying to play the control bit by not sending on reports in a timely manner might have cost me surgery this yeat.  Surgeon's  schedule is  filling up fast! :X

Please keep me in mind when you are sending on encourgement.

Deanna,

Don't worry.  The surgeon will not let you out without guidines as to when you can eat something.  You will start out much like a baby.  Only liquids.  Then pureed food, then soft food.  You will be fine.  I was on liquids for a week and then pureed food for a week and then soft food for two months.  I asked my doc many of the questions you did.  Like what if the pouch leaks?  He said, "I'll know it before you leave the hospital!"  If you trust your surgeon, if you have checked out his/her track record, you will be fine.  Research, talk to others who have had your same surgeon.  My surgeon has been doing the wls for over 30 yrs.  He has done 1500 to 2000 surgeries (he remembers, I forgot!)  So, look for a good track record.  My surgeon has had only one death and that was a lady who stopped eating all together and starved to death.  She slipped through the psych screening.  So, try to relax.  It will be ok.

CountryKitten,

I am so sorry that you are having problems.  I had a real issue with my pcp clinic not sending my records in and causing me to have to go into another calendar year and thus I had to reach my deductible all over again.  I was really angry but that was just the way it went.  Then I met Nurse Ratchet who decided on her own that she wouldn't put me on the schedule until I lost 25 lbs.  My surgeon had told me, "The surgery will go better for you, be easier on you if you can lose another 20 to 25 lbs."  Then after I got my approval letter from the insurance company and the doctor was already in Arizona for the winter, Nurse Ratchet called and said, "You have to lose 25 lbs before I put you on the schedule."  I said, that isn't what the doctor told me!  And she sighed and said, "That is what I'm telling you.  I won't put you on the schedule until you lose 25 lbs.  So let me know when you get there.  Otherwise you will not hear from this office again."  I was just devastated!  I had been working for 4 yrs by that time at getting the surgery.  But, I did it.  I lost the 25 lbs.  I had the surgery and I have now lost 111 lbs in a bit under 5 months.  You can do it.  It will all work out in the end.  As Melissa and Dan say, "Everything happens for a reason."

Hang in there!  It is well worth the wait and the weight!

Thank you so much for your incouragement.  Gosh it seems like when we finally make the committment to ourselves they should see how much that has really effected us and at least be a little more compassionate.  But, No!  It's the control issue here!

So glad you had the will power to lose the 25 lbs.  I hope I can if they ask me.

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum and looking forward to learning from all of your experiences!  I am currently waiting for the final pre-auth from my insurance so that I can set a date for surgery.  I'm extremely excited, but understandably nervous as well.

I have had a couple of questions in the back of my mind that I am hoping some of you can help with.

1.  How did you know which procedure was the right choice for you?  There seems to be so much conflicting information out there that it is hard to weed through sometimes.

2.  How have you handled lack of support from your loved ones?

Thanks for your help!

I can only answer your first question.  The sucess rate for those sho have over 200lbs to lose is why I chose RNY surgery.  The band is not as sucessful and the patients I met at my surgeons office were not as happy as those of us who have had the RNY.

Best wishes with making your decision.

I'm new and have 23 days until my surgery, I'm scared. I know I've made the right choice in having the Roux n y. Still I cant help but be scared, of all the what if's.  I have a husband of 15 years 3 wonderful children and 2 glorious grandchildren. I know if I dont have the surgery, I will die before I should. I just worry what if, having the surgery and somthing goes wrong, I will be robbing my family of time they could of had with me.

I've got the jitters

Kimberly, I'd be worried about you if you didn't have the jitters.  It's perfectly normal.  You'll do just fine and your entire family is going to benefit.  Lucky them!

Best Wishes,
Pamela

CountryKitten,  The way to begin your weight loss is to start eating like you already had it. I am down 27 pounds now from Feb. 4th but did not REALLy start lossing until about Aug. when appt. dates started happening and I started getting more focused. There are good recipes on the msn forum, sry have not checked out the ones on here. I bought Melissa and Dan's book, has a few very tasty recipes. Also bought a Cook book just for US, more tasty meals there.

Clean out your frig and cabinets of all the "before" foods and do not buy them again  : )   You can do this!!!!!!

Hello CountryKitten,

First, congrats!!!!

Now, have you started changing what you eat? How you eat? Noticed your headhunger? Stop eating fastfood, clean out frig and pantry. Ok, now you need to start cooking and eating as if you have already had surgery. There are some very good recipes on site and highly suggest you pick up a cookbook just for US. Get your rear up and doing some exercise NOW  : )   You will be amazed at how the weight starts coming off. When you get to two weeks prior to surgery date you could put yourself on protein drinks.

Ex:

Breakfast: protein drink and half a fruit

Lunch: protein drink and some vegis

Dinner: frozen meal under 300 calories

My surgery date is Nov. 5th but I have already cleaned out area JUST for me in kitchen. Bought cookbook and have learned I really love to cook. Like made this yummy dish. Italian turkey sausage slow cooked with garlic, onions, bellpepers, and diced tomatoe. Take a spagetti squash (have now cooked two and really love it) cut in half place in pan with inch of water and garlic cloves place inside, bake 350 of 50 mins. Cut up sausage mix it all together  adding fresh parmesan cheese on top and bake for 25 mins......yum!!

Hope this helps!

Oh~~~~~~~~~~~~~ they asked me and I'm trying soooooooooooooo hard to lose this weight.  It's very slow.  I wonder if I should just go on protein now and see how that goes.  Maybe 3 x's a day with a light meal?  Anyone out there that's knows if that will work?

thank for all the input.

You will give them strength and encourgement that they can and should do the right thing for themselves in their lifetimes. No matter what the risk is. That you took the steps to better yourself, for them. I know, that's what I have told my famiily.  They are all scared, but respect my decision.  I do not want to die.  I do not want to die fat! Without this surgery my doctors have told me I will do both. Good luch and pat yourself on the back, you have taken a gaint step in health and living.

Hello Country Kitten

I'm doing very well now and I'm 9 days out and have lost 17.5 lbs to date woot woo!!

Check with your Dr, and see what they would have you do , and also for how many shakes they would want you to consume. I had 3 to 4 slimfast shakes a day and 1 light meal in the evening, fluids are very important even before your surgery. I started taking 64 oz with me everyday to work, and would try to consume all of that before I came home and cooked our dinner.

Just stay strong and focused and you can do this!

Take care talk to you soon,

Kimberly aka 1flowerforever :P
