Thank you everyone for the tips. I am learning "headhunger", trying to master drinking 64oz's of water. I have never been a water drinker, Never! So this is really hard. I fill 2 32oz bottles and so far have managed to down 1 of them pretty good, with 1 tea and the ice in the protein shakes and other liquids I probably get another 16oz's in..... so still have a long way to go, but some time yet.
I will buy the slimfast and do that and protein drinks on the road while I work. One thing I have been doing is eating fruit, never done to well with that either, but now like Gala apples and eat those and a sm amount of hard cheese for lunch. I liked the advice about when family asks what you want for Christmas, telling them protein shakes and vitiamins, etc. Perfect way to go! I look at catologs now and just dream of wearing the cute clothes that other small normal sized people wear. That will be the best present I can ever give myself next year!
Today, I received a notice about my upcoming 50th, reunion, OMG! How can that be, wasn't I just 35yo (?) yesterday????? What a treat it will be to show up this next summer a new me. Most will not even know me. Will I even know myself? LOL

I too have gotten into apples. My current favorite is Honey-Crisp. Got some today at Whole Foods. Also picked up some Pimento spread which I will put on celery. The spread has no carbs and 4 grams of protein per ounce. Thought it would make a nice treat. I just love that place!

Hi all,
Someone mentioned a cook book just for us, where can I find it and what's it's name.
If my scale is right I'm down by 5 lbs, so another 15 to 20 to go before surgery (1/13/09). I have pre-surgery appts on 12/8/08, so would like to lose another 5 lbs by then, that should make them happy, I think.
So far seeing most foods don't bother me, even when cooking for family, but getting the water down does. That's hard.
Well it's time for another delicious protein meal.........

Hi CountryKitten:
It's really not necessary to buy cookbooks specific for WLS patients, but there are some great ones out there. The one thing we try to reiterate is the necessity to learn to adapt everyday items and recipes to fit our needs as well as for our families. Really good high protein recipes/cookbooks are a great source for WLS patients. The High Protein Cookbook is an awesome one with really quick, super delicious, hi.gh protein recipes.

Hi, everyone. I just joined today. I just got approved for my surgery, which is on December 3rd. I'm excited to find a place to get information from those who have been there, as well as those who are going through the pre-op worries, like me.
Since my first appointment with the bariatric surgeon in June of this year, I have lost about 22 pounds, and my A1c is down too. I'm excited and admittedly a little nervous about the upcoming gastric bypass surgery in TWO WEEKS!

Hi Junebug:
Welcome to our happy little family here! It's a great place for info, support and so much more. We're firm believers that long term success won't happen without long term support. The two just go hand-in-hand.
Your two weeks will fly by and then you're going to be wondering why on earth you were even nervous at all. If there's anything we can do to help ease your mind, please let us all know. We're more than willing to help.

I just discovered this site and have been reading all of it for the last hour. Great stuff! I weigh 270 now and would love to be at 200 or less eventually. I am in the later stages with Dr Fernandez going for the bypass. I have not been approved by insurance yet nor do I have a date scheduled. Hopefully sometime in February I can do it. I have been heavy all my life and have never been good at counting calories or planning meals. I am a simple guy and from what I've read I think protein (meat) followed by veggies and lots and lots water has to be my focus from now on. I know I still have to meet with the dietitian yet. But I'm hoping by reading all of what "The Losers" have written, even a simple guy like me can make this work. Rob

| arcandy I have read everything that I can get my eyes on. Joining the message board is a bg step toward support. These people on here give lots of good advice. Mostly, I sit back and read the posts going back and forth. It really helps me.

Hi! I'm 6 days away from my surgery date and I'm wondering what the best thing to wear while I'm in the hospital, a nightgown or pajammas? Do you have any advice? I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks

Thank you Mary! I am new here and my name is Marilyn. I will be having my surgery (roux-en-Y) on Mon. Feb. 23, 2009 @ 7:30AM and I am so excited I think I would run into the operating room if they would let me. I am excited about this online support and will look forward to meeting others with same, concerns, interests, and successes.
I do have a question. Did you have to follow a full liquid diet 2 weeks prior to surgery? Hoping I'm getting enough nutrition with all the clear liquids. The only protein I am eating is in my protein shakes. Wondering if you have any advice or suggestions
Thank you for your support..

I am so happy for you and your surgery date. Mine is Apr. 20th and I wish that it was over two months ago. I'm new to the board too. I have been reading the book that Melissa wrote. I'm so excited to be able to become a much healthier person thru all of this.
Let us know how your surgery goes. We will be here for you any time you need us!

I just had my surgery feb. 17th. I didn't know what to bring to the hospital either. I had a whole suitcase full of jammies, undies etc. As it turned out, all I needed was a brush for my hair. They supplied everything, toothbrush, toothpaste and all.
Good luck

I am scheduled for my surgery in late august and was wondering if anyone had any advice for me about what to take to the hospital with me.
I am planning of a pair of pajamas, a book, and toothbrush and toothpaste. Anything else?
Thanks for your suggestions.

chapstick and a hairbrush... you don't get ice chips, water or anything (at least I didn't) for the first 12-24hrs after surgery and your lips will be mighty dry! Wish you the best of luck and smooth sailing thru the surgery!
